In the manufacturing of machine-made carpets and rugs, the woven rugs or tufted carpets need to be finished with a coating of latex compound at their back. This not only gives good anchoring of the piles to the primary backing or woven substrate but also gives weight and handle to the carpet. Depending on what type of handle and feel is required, the type of latex can be chosen and this needs to be applied after adding various chemicals and calcium to the latex as per recipe worked out by each factory.
